Miami (EFE).- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the deportation of the first Kenyan-born NFL football player, Daniel Ogama Adongo, for overstaying in the country after the end of his sports career and due to his criminal record.
The federal agency stated -in a press release- that the Kenyan, who played as a linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts from 2013 to 2015, remained in the United States after his visa expired in 2016, which is why his deportation was carried out last Monday.
ICE also stated that Indiana police arrested Adongo on “multiple occasions” over the last nine years, for crimes such as felony intimidation, battery, and disorderly conduct, in addition to receiving a sentence of nearly a year in jail for criminal mischief in 2020.

The Laken Riley Act
His most recent criminal charges were filed under the Laken Riley Act, a law enacted by President Donald Trump in January 2025 to mandatorily detain certain “illegal immigrants” without the right to bail if they are accused of certain crimes.

“This dangerous individual was clearly a threat to the community, which is safer now that he has been removed. All those who violate immigration law will be held accountable, including former professional athletes,” said Chicago ICE Field Office Assistant Director Douglas Thompson.
The deportation comes amid a spike in immigration arrests in the United States, which totaled more than 43,000 in June, including those by ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which is the highest figure since the start of Trump’s second presidency in January 2025.
