Santo Domingo,.- The Ministry of Public Health, through the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (SINAVE), assured this Thursday that 20 cases of leptospirosis and 18 of malaria have been registered so far this year.

Faced with respiratory viruses, the Ministry of Public Health has reinforced epidemiological and virological surveillance, timely influenza vaccination in priority groups, and diagnostic and hospital capacity, anticipating the health system’s response. These actions, the organization highlighted in a note, seek to reduce transmission, prevent hospitalizations and deaths, and strengthen the resilience of the healthcare system in the face of the circulation of these viruses. During SE -06 of the year 2026, the province of La Romana reported a case of maternal death, corresponding to a 48-year-old Dominican woman, for a total of 10 deaths so far in 2026. The bulletin reports 38 infant deaths, for a total of 197 in the first two months of the year. Compared to the same period in 2025, when 227 were reported, a reduction of 30 deaths is observed. The epidemiological bulletin for this week highlights as its main topic the commemoration of Rare Disease Day, celebrated every February 28th, with the aim of raising awareness about these pathologies that affect more than 300 million people worldwide. In that sense, the Minister of Public Health, Víctor Atallah, emphasized that rare diseases require a state perspective, since it is not only about clinical protocols; but also about guaranteeing rights. The Ministry of Public Health stated that it has care protocols for many Rare Diseases, and the challenge of building a more equitable system is highlighted so that all families have support in the face of this type of diagnosis, which are rare.
