More than 50 minors were intoxicated with alcohol on Christmas and New Year’s Eve

Santo Domingo,.- The National Health Service (SNS) reported this Friday that it sent to the Attorney General’s Office and the Ministry of Public Health the list with the names of the 52 minors assisted in hospital emergencies due to alcohol poisoning during the Christmas and New Year holiday.

In a statement, the director of SNS Hospital Centers, Dr. Yocasta Lara, explained that the doctors of the health centers also immediately reported the cases to the local prosecutor’s office at the time of assistance, so that the corresponding investigations and actions can be carried out.

Lara described the event as highly concerning, as it involves children and adolescents exposed to a serious risk to their health and physical integrity. “Alcohol intoxication in minors is a completely preventable event. As a society, we must reinforce adult supervision and ensure safe environments for our children and adolescents, especially during family celebrations,” he said in a statement. The consumption of alcohol at an early age can lead to severe and even irreversible consequences, which is why Lara insisted “on prevention and family and community co-responsibility as fundamental pillars to protect the health of Dominican children”.
