Santo Domingo. — The residents of Sur street, in the Los Girasoles sector, near Monumental Avenue, are helpless and crying out due to the heavy rains caused by storm Melissa, which have caused major floods in the area. The intense amount of water flowing down the ravine has forced many families to hastily leave their homes, leaving behind most of their belongings.

“We are desperate. Look how the water is going down and you have to run out, with the mattresses floating,” expressed one of the residents, while watching how the water kept rising.

Another community member pointed out that the problem is not new and that the authorities have promised solutions on several occasions without concrete results.

“They always say they’re fixing it and nothing ever gets fixed,” lamented the neighbor.

The situation not only affects the homes, but also vehicular traffic, as numerous drivers have been stranded on Monumental Avenue as they are unable to cross due to the large amount of accumulated water.
