Santo Domingo,.- The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources launched the Ozama Cabinet, an inter-institutional entity designated by the president, Luis Abinader, which will be in charge of promoting the integral recovery of the Ozama and Isabela rivers, through sanitation actions, control of polluting sources, waste valorization and ecological restoration, the institution reported this Tuesday.

In addition, the aim is to remove sunken vessels in the Ozama River that affect navigability and the health of its ecosystems, install infrastructure for the treatment of polluting liquids (leachate) in Duquesa, and control the main sources of solid waste generation in the areas of influence. The scope of the project includes the design, execution, and monitoring of eight key components covering environmental infrastructure, waste management, control of polluting sources, physical restoration, and inter-institutional agreements. The geographical area includes the direct influence zones of both rivers, especially in the sectors Domingo Savio, Pantoja, La Isabela, Dique del Ozama and Duquesa, indicated Environment. According to the ministry, in Greater Santo Domingo there are 99 ravines that require intervention. In the first phase, six priority canals of the Isabela are considered, including Arroyo Hondo, Arroyo Manzano, Villa Linda, Duquesa 1, Duquesa 2, and Duquesa 3. The recovery of the Ozama and Isabela rivers, “is an environmental responsibility and an opportunity to recover vital water resources for the country,” the ministry pointed out. “The project lays the groundwork for its sanitation with a sustainable, inter-institutional, and social approach,” added the institution.
