Constanza.– Early this Friday morning, the first extreme frost of the 2025-2026 frontal season was recorded in Valle Nuevo, Constanza municipality, with a minimum temperature of -7.3 °C, as a result of the direct influence of a polar air mass affecting the Dominican Republic.
The meteorologist Jean Suriel indicated that in addition to the marked thermal drop, the event left four unusual winter phenomena in the Caribbean, characteristic of the mountainous areas of the country:
- Frost: the dew froze on the vegetation, forming a whitish mantle that covered the pajones of the protected area.
- Hoarfrost: the tiny droplets of fog froze on contact with shrubs and plants, creating ice needles attached to the vegetation.
- Hair ice: the water accumulated in the soil and subsoil sprouted to the surface in thin frozen strands, a striking phenomenon associated with humid soils and sub-zero temperatures.
- Surface freezing: the water left in containers outdoors froze completely, because the temperatures remained below zero from 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Valle Nuevo is one of the areas of the country where extreme temperatures are most frequently recorded during the winter season. The analyst highlighted that the Dominican Republic is the only country in the Antilles where sub-zero temperatures are reached during the frontal season and the so-called tropical winter, thanks to the presence of the highest mountains and peaks in the entire Caribbean region.
