NEW YORK.– Overseas deputy Cirilo Moronta stated that Dominican legislators in New York are the main link between the community residing in the United States and the Dominican government, asserting that, without their intervention, President Luis Abinader would not have direct knowledge of many of the problems facing the diaspora.
Moronta explained that the representatives of Dominicans abroad have the responsibility to bring the concerns and needs of the community to the Government, which is why he considered it fundamental to maintain these spaces of representation.
Regarding the proposal to eliminate the overseas vote due to electoral abstention, the legislator described the idea as “madness” and defended the right of Dominicans residing outside the country to choose their leaders.
He acknowledged that there is abstention among Dominicans in New York, but pointed out that this phenomenon is also recorded in the Dominican Republic, so, in his opinion, the solution should not be to eliminate the diaspora vote.
Moronta suggested that, instead of eliminating this right, initiatives should be promoted to motivate Dominicans living abroad to go to the polls and actively participate in electoral processes.
