U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Florida businessman Austin Holmes as the next U.S. ambassador to Haiti. The nomination was sent to the Senate on September 14 and referred to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where it remains pending confirmation.
Holmes has nearly two decades of experience working in Haiti on humanitarian assistance, security and rescue operations. He has also participated in efforts to recover kidnapping victims and has worked with U.S. agencies and Haitian authorities. His experience includes response operations following the 2010 earthquake, Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and the 2021 earthquake.
If confirmed by the Senate, Holmes would take over the diplomatic post as Haiti continues to face a severe security, institutional and humanitarian crisis. His nomination comes as the United States remains actively involved in international efforts focused on security and humanitarian assistance in the country.
