U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz on Monday backed the Dominican Republic’s position that Haiti’s ongoing crisis poses a threat to its national security, warning that the spread of criminal gangs, arms trafficking, and drug smuggling cannot be contained within Haiti’s borders.

Speaking during a United Nations Security Council meeting on Haiti, Waltz said the Dominican government is right to view the deteriorating situation in its neighboring country as a serious security concern, citing the ability of criminal organizations to expand their operations across the Caribbean.

The U.S. diplomat’s remarks echoed a longstanding position of Dominican authorities, who have argued that Haiti’s crisis is no longer solely an internal matter but a regional security threat with direct consequences for the Dominican Republic, the only country sharing a land border with Haiti.
