U.S. suspends visas for visitors from Gaza for an “exhaustive” review
Washington.- The United States announced this Saturday that it has stopped issuing visitor visas to people from Gaza to conduct an “exhaustive” review of the process by which it has recently granted a “small number” of humanitarian visas from the Palestinian enclave.
“All visitor visas for people from Gaza are being suspended while we conduct a complete and thorough review of the process and procedures used to issue a small number of temporary medical and humanitarian visas in recent days,” the U.S. Department of State reported on X.
In the brief statement on social media, the U.S. Government did not offer details on how long this verification will last.
As part of the restrictive immigration policy of the Administration of President Donald Trump, the State Department has canceled hundreds of visas since last January, including those of hundreds of foreign students who participated in pro-Palestinian protests against Israel’s offensive in Gaza.
Trump maintains his close alliance with the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, although he has recently shown a willingness to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, which is suffering one of the worst crises in its recent history amid the war waged between Israel and the Palestinian extremist group Hamas.
The US president has expressed the need to end the conflict in Gaza, where local authorities have reported an increase in hunger-related deaths. Washington is mediating indirect negotiations in Doha between Hamas and Netanyahu’s government.
With the death of 62 Gazans on Friday, the toll since the start of the Israeli offensive, on October 7, 2023, rises to 61,897 deaths in the Strip, according to the enclave’s Ministry of Health, controlled by Hamas.
