Uruguayan footballer Bruno Bentancor has died at the age of 22 after suffering a cardiac arrest, his club Deportivo Italiano announced.
“From Deportivo Italiano, we want to inform everyone that our player, Bruno Bentancor, better known as ‘Bola,’ has passed away due to a cardiorespiratory arrest,” the club said in a statement, paying tribute to the striker.
Bentancor had recently joined Deportivo Italiano, which competes in Uruguay’s third division, after returning from Argentina, where he had been on trial with Deportivo Riestra.
Days before his death, Bentancor was involved in an off-field incident after being accused of taking sports apparel belonging to other players during his stay with the Argentine club. According to reports, he paid for the items, and Deportivo Riestra decided not to pursue legal action.
During his career, Bentancor also played for Peñarol’s youth academy, Rentistas, Cerro, Everton de Viña del Mar in Chile, and Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates.
