LONDON. – English defender Harry Maguire, player for Manchester United and the England national team, was sentenced by a Greek court to 15 months suspended imprisonment for the incidents that occurred in August 2020 on the island of Mykonos.

The sentence was issued by a court on the island of Syros, which found the footballer guilty of assault, attempted bribery, and resisting arrest. As it is a suspended sentence, Maguire will not have to serve effective prison time as long as he does not reoffend in the future. The events date back to the summer of 2020, when the center-back was involved in a fight outside a bar during his vacation in Greece. Initially, he was sentenced that same year to 21 months and ten days of suspended prison, but after filing an appeal, the process was annulled and the retrial was ordered. The second legal process was postponed on several occasions until the new verdict was finally announced. The player’s legal team announced that they will appeal the decision again, reiterating that the footballer has denied the charges at all times. Maguire was not present in Greece during the reading of the sentence. According to British media, he is expected to be able to rejoin Manchester United’s discipline as normal and be available for Premier League commitments. In statements previously offered to the BBC, the defender assured that he acted in self-defense and feared for his life during the incident. For their part, the Greek police maintained that both the player and his brother physically assaulted and insulted the officers. The case remains open to higher instances following the announcement of a new appeal by the footballer’s defense.
