PHILADELPHIA — Dominican infielder Jean Segura has officially announced his retirement from professional baseball after a 12-season career in the Major Leagues.

Segura, who was acquired by the Phillies before the trade deadline in 2019 from the Seattle Mariners, was a fundamental part of the team that reached the World Series in 2022. During his time in Philadelphia, he accumulated the highest WAR of his career (8.9), leaving a positive mark despite not matching the level he showed when he was selected to the All-Star Game with Milwaukee and Seattle, nor when he finished 13th in the MVP voting with Arizona.
One of his most remembered moments came in the 2022 National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves, where he batted 6-for-13 with two doubles, two walks, one RBI, and one stolen base, being a key piece in the Phillies’ historic qualification to the World Series.
After that campaign, the team decided not to exercise its US$17 million option and chose to sign star shortstop Trea Turner. Segura moved to the Miami Marlins, where his offensive production declined notably (.219/.277/.279 in 85 games). He was later traded to the Cleveland Guardians, who immediately released him.
His last professional appearance was with a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles in August 2024, without playing games with the team before being released in September.
