SANTO DOMINGO.– The Dominican Republic women’s basketball team won the bronze medal at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026, after defeating Panama 66-53 this Sunday at the Professor Virgilio Travieso Soto Banreservas Arena.

The Dominican team took control of the game from the first minutes thanks to an effective offense and a solid defense. The hosts dominated the first quarter 19-10 and extended the lead with a 22-18 run in the second, to go into halftime with a favorable score of 41-28.
Panama reacted in the third period and cut the lead by winning 17-8, closing the gap to 49-45. However, Ariel Portuondo’s team regained control of the match in the final quarter, led by an accurate three-point shot from Leyla Núñez that extended the lead again and paved the way for the Dominican victory.
Leyla Núñez led the winners’ offense with 17 points, including five three-pointers in nine attempts. Nathaly Santana recorded a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Arisleidy Tolentino also achieved a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Arianna Mercado contributed eight units.
For Panama, Sofía Ponce and Lya González scored 10 points each and grabbed eight rebounds, while Génesis Parks also contributed 10 units.
With the victory, the Dominican Republic concluded its participation in the women’s tournament with the bronze medal, adding a new medal to the national tally.
