SANTO DOMINGO. Dominican chess player Josué Araujo won the gold medal in the Rapid Board category at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026, adding another gold medal for the Dominican Republic in the multi-sport event.

Araujo completed an outstanding performance throughout the tournament, imposing his strategy and precision on the board to finish at the top of the podium and continue expanding the host delegation’s medal count.
In the final stretch of the competition, the Dominican athlete surpassed the representatives of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Venezuela, El Salvador, and Haiti, results that secured him the championship in the rapid chess category.
Among his most important victories stands out the triumph achieved in the seventh round against the experienced Mexican Grandmaster Gilberto Hernández Guerrero, whom he defeated playing with the white pieces. In addition, he added important successes against rivals from Colombia, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, Guatemala and Puerto Rico.
Araujo’s conquest represents a new achievement for Dominican chess and strengthens the performance of the national delegation in the Central American and Caribbean Games, where the athletes continue to add medals and star in outstanding performances.
