Santo Domingo.– The General Directorate of Community Development (DGDC) launched the project “Book Bank: A book, a hope,” an initiative aimed at collecting books in good condition to be distributed free of charge to adolescents in conflict with criminal law, as well as to children, youth, and adults in vulnerable communities.

The program aims to expand access to reading, strengthen educational opportunities, and promote knowledge as a tool for social transformation.

The initiative, led by the Director General of the DGDC, Modesto Guzmán, seeks to involve citizens, companies, educational centers, and public and private institutions, who will be able to donate books they no longer use, provided they are in suitable condition to be enjoyed by new readers.

During the launch event, Guzmán highlighted that education and access to knowledge are fundamental pillars for generating positive changes in society, which is why he invited the public to join this cause.

As part of the project, starting next week, collection boxes will be installed at various points in Santo Domingo and the National District, where literature books, educational texts, children’s and youth works, and reference materials can be deposited.

The collected specimens will be removed and classified by personnel from the General Directorate of Community Development to subsequently be delivered to the beneficiaries.

The DGDC reported that the initiative contemplates a progressive expansion at the national level, with the purpose of bringing books to libraries in the Comprehensive Care Centers for Adolescents in Conflict with Criminal Law, adult penitentiary centers, and educational and community spaces, especially in areas with higher levels of vulnerability.

Guzmán pointed out that the project represents an opportunity for citizens to contribute to the educational and personal development of sectors that require greater opportunities for access to reading.

The program is supported by Rica, Grupo Ramos, Casa Brugal, Agencia Bella, Junta Central Electoral, Grupo SID, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs, General Directorate of Customs and Santo Domingo Motors, entities that will provide spaces for the installation of donation boxes.

The activity was attended by the Minister of Women, Gloria Reyes; the National Director of Comprehensive Care for Adolescents in Conflict with Criminal Law (DINAIA), Carlos Guerrero; the Director of Educa, Yahaira Sosa; the Director of Culture and Cults of the Ministry of Education, Antonio Reynoso; the writer Alfonso Quiñónez, as well as representatives of public and private institutions linked to the initiative.
