Santo Domingo. – Receiving a blood transfusion no longer necessarily implies going to a hospital. In response to the needs of patients with reduced mobility or those who require frequent transfusions, the Interventional Pain and Palliative Care Unit (Unidolor) has launched Hemohogar, a service that allows this procedure to be performed in the patient’s home.
The initiative is primarily aimed at people with hematological diseases, cancer patients, and those suffering from chronic conditions associated with anemia, groups that frequently require periodic transfusions as part of their treatment.
According to specialists, the possibility of receiving this type of care at home represents a significant advantage for patients facing physical limitations or whose health condition makes constant travel to hospital centers difficult.
Internal medicine hematologist Clara Balcácer explained that this care model helps avoid travel that can be exhausting for the patient, in addition to reducing waiting times and exposure to hospital environments.

“There are patients who require recurrent transfusions and for whom each trip represents a significant physical and emotional effort. Being able to receive the procedure in a familiar and safe environment has a positive impact on their well-being,” he/she pointed out.
Home transfusions are a modality used in different health systems to bring specialized treatments closer to patients who need continuous monitoring, especially in cases of complex or advanced diseases.
With the incorporation of this service, home medical care options are expanded for people who require specialized care without the need to leave home.
