Johnny Depp could return as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6
Johnny Depp’s return as Jack Sparrow to the Pirates of the Caribbean 6 saga seems to be getting closer and closer. Jerry Bruckheimer, the franchise’s producer, confirmed that there are currently conversations with the actor and that the team continues to work on the script for a possible sixth installment.
During his participation at D23, Bruckheimer pointed out that the project is still in development and expressed his hope that it can finally come to fruition.
“We are talking to Johnny, we are working on a script and, hopefully, we can do this,” the producer declared
Although Depp’s possible participation has generated great expectation among the saga’s followers, the sixth film would not be conceived exclusively as a continuation of Jack Sparrow’s adventures.
According to information published by Deadline, the project would have Margot Robbie as the main character, who would take the lead in a new story within the Pirates of the Caribbean universe. Sparrow, in the event that the agreement with Depp is finalized, would have a supporting role.

The proposal would allow Disney to renew the franchise without completely letting go of one of its most recognized characters.
Johnny Depp and his history as Jack Sparrow
Johnny Depp first played Jack Sparrow in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’, released in 2003 and directed by Gore Verbinski. The film also featured Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann.
The actor returned for the following installments:
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006).
- Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007).
- Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011).
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).
The fifth film grossed approximately $795.9 million worldwide, becoming the lowest-grossing installment of the saga up to that point. Together, the five films have surpassed $4.5 billion at the global box office.
The possibility of Depp returning to play Jack Sparrow has been the subject of speculation for several years. In 2018, screenwriter Stuart Beattie even suggested that the actor might be closing his chapter as the famous pirate.
However, Bruckheimer’s recent statements open the door to his return once again, although there is still no official confirmation that Depp has signed on to participate in the sixth film.
For now, the project remains in the development phase and the script is still being worked on by the creative team.
Johnny Depp’s next project
While his possible return to Pirates of the Caribbean is being defined, Depp has other film projects underway. Among them is ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol’, a new adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens story in which he will play Ebenezer Scrooge.
The film is scheduled for release on November 13.
For the moment, Jack Sparrow fans will have to wait to see if they will finally hear one of the character’s most recognizable phrases aboard a pirate ship again. What is confirmed is that Disney is keeping the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’ project alive and that Johnny Depp is back in talks.
