Santo Domingo. – Regarding the recent recognition of Ercilia Pepín as a National Hero, a tour conducted by a De Último Minuto team in various streets of the capital showed the limited knowledge that citizens have about the life and contributions of this key figure in the educational history of the country.
During the interviews, most of those consulted admitted not knowing who Pepín was nor the reasons for his exaltation as Procer de la Patria. Some barely associated his name with a school, while others acknowledged that they had never heard of him.
Ercilia Pepín was a pioneer of education in the Dominican Republic, recognized for her defense of civics, patriotic values, and the role of women in society. The lack of knowledge of her legacy among the population highlights the outstanding debt of the education system and the State in promoting historical and civic values.
