Colombia awaits extradition from the United Kingdom of a woman accused of poisoning two girls with raspberries

Bogotá. – The Colombian government awaits the extradition from the United Kingdom of Zulma Guzmán Castro, a 54-year-old Colombian citizen, accused of the alleged murder of two minors through the use of raspberries contaminated with thallium, a highly toxic metal. The woman was recently captured in British territory after remaining a fugitive from justice. According to local media reports, Guzmán Castro was charged by the Attorney General’s Office for her alleged responsibility in the death of Inés de Bedout, 14, and Emilia Forero, 13, events that occurred in Bogotá in April 2025. Investigations indicate that the minors had ingested poisoned raspberries, which caused them a severe intoxication that led to their death. The Colombian Minister of Justice, Andrés Idárraga, confirmed this Monday that the formal extradition request was presented to the authorities of the United Kingdom last week.

“We have been speaking directly with the UK Government to materialize this situation and ensure that this woman, charged by the Prosecutor’s Office, arrives in the country during the week,” the official told the press.

Idárraga indicated that the process is advancing in accordance with the judicial cooperation treaties in force between both countries and expressed confidence that the extradition will materialize in the coming days, given the seriousness of the charges and the strength of the file presented by the Prosecutor’s Office. The case has generated national shock in Colombia, both due to the young age of the victims and the manner of the crime. The authorities reiterated their commitment to bring the accused to justice and ensure that the judicial process is carried out with full respect for the rights of the victims and due process.
