DR stands out in Latin America for institutional advances and low levels of political risk
Santo Domingo. – Dominican Republic is among the countries with the best relative performance in governance in the Political Risk Index in Latin America 2026, prepared by the Center for International Studies of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (CEIUC)
The report, now in its sixth annual edition, examines the main challenges of the region and identifies the country for its sustained democratic progress, even in the current Latin American context marked by political polarization, the rise of organized crime, and the institutional fragility of several states.
According to the metrics included in the index, the Dominican Republic shows positive signs, excelling in relatively orderly political processes, institutional continuity, and less exposure to scenarios of democratic breakdown compared to other countries in the region. This performance reinforces the perception of the country as a reliable political environment, which is key for investment and sustainable development.
Within the index, the relatively low homicide rate and a smaller number of events associated with criminal economies stand out, in contrast to the prevailing trends in large areas of Latin America. This is particularly relevant since the expansion of criminal networks is identified among the main risks for the continent.
Another highlight in the regional analysis is the progress in formulating a national strategy for artificial intelligence. Positioning itself among the countries that are beginning to examine this technology as a tool for the modernization of the State, its public policies, and the strengthening of economic competitiveness.
The study was presented on January 14th by its editors —Jorge Sahd, director of CEIUC, and Daniel Zovatto, senior researcher— who spoke with five specialists who concluded that 2026 will be a decisive year for the hemisphere. It was prepared with the participation of experts, opinion leaders, authorities, and academic leaders in international relations in order to map the 10 main points to be taken into consideration for the political stability of the region.
In a regional landscape marked by complexity, the Political Risk Index in Latin America 2026 shows that the Dominican Republic stands out for favorable conditions to face the challenges of the coming years, reaffirming its role as a benchmark for stability.
