The European Union (EU) delegation in Kyiv was “deliberately” damaged during the overnight Russian air strikes against the Ukrainian capital, according to the President of the European Council, António Costa, who declared himself “horrified” this Thursday at this new night of attacks.
“The EU will not be intimidated. Russian aggression only reinforces our resolve to stand by Ukraine and its people,” said Costa, who shared a photo of an office with broken window panes and multiple damages.
Also on her social media, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, confirmed that all delegation staff are safe and urged the Kremlin to stop its indiscriminate attacks and to participate in negotiations for a just and lasting peace.
At least ten civilians, including a child, have died tonight in Kyiv as a result of the Russian night attacks with missiles and drones, according to Ukrainian authorities.
“The number of injured has risen to 48. Of these, ten have died,” announced the head of the Kyiv military administration, Timur Tkachenko, on Telegram.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that people could still be found under the rubble, as rescue efforts are still ongoing.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, shared her solidarity with the staff of the European delegation in Kyiv, whom she called “the voice of the EU on the ground in Ukraine”, and noted that both they and “the brave Ukrainian people” deserve to live in peace.
For her part, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, lamented that “while the world seeks a path to peace, Russia responds with missiles” and said that the attack of the past dawn “shows a deliberate decision to escalate tension and mock peace efforts”.
“Russia must stop the killings and negotiate,” Kallas said.
The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, also called the attack “a clear sign that Russia rejects peace and chooses terror”.
