Former Cuban Justice Minister Oscar Silvera assumes presidency of the Supreme Court

Havana.- Former Cuban Minister of Justice Oscar Manuel Silvera assumed the position of president of the Supreme People’s Court (TSP) of the island, as reported this Tuesday by the Presidency through a statement.

Silvera was confirmed in his position by the island parliament last December, after the dismissal of the previous TSP president, Rubén Remigio, who had been at the head of the high court for 27 years, was announced in the chamber -suddenly-. “The members of the judicial bodies ratify our support for the Revolution, and we will defend it with the same courage that made it possible for the historical generation led by Fidel (Castro) and Raúl (Castro),” Silvera expressed after being invested at the José Martí Memorial in Revolution Square in Havana.

The new president of the TSP took office during the opening ceremony of the judicial year, which was attended by the island’s president, Miguel Díaz-Canel.

After proposing his appointment before the parliament, in which practically all initiatives are approved unanimously, the Cuban president highlighted the “professionalism, leadership capacity and personal qualities” of the former Minister of Justice.
Silvera held the Justice portfolio since the beginning of Díaz-Canel’s first term, in 2018.

For their part, Cuban deputies confirmed in December Rosabel Gamón, until then First Deputy Minister, as the Minister of Justice of the Caribbean country.
