The Unified Council of Distribution Companies (CUED) held this Tuesday the presentation of credentials for the Public Tender for new renewable generation of up to 600 MW, which for the first time includes energy storage infrastructure or batteries as an essential part of the projects. The president of CUED, Celso Marranzini, highlighted that the incorporation of this technology will allow the conversion of renewable sources into base energy, strengthening the stability of the electrical system and the reliability of the national supply. “I am seeing a large attendance that will definitely improve the situation of the distributors, and even more so with batteries,” said Marranzini. Energy storage through batteries represents one of the most transformative trends in the global electricity sector. It allows for managing the intermittency of solar and wind generation, ensuring that the energy produced during generation peaks is available when demand increases or weather conditions reduce production. Its incorporation not only improves the stability of the system and reduces the dependence on fossil fuels, but also turns renewables into a continuous and manageable source of energy, which translates into greater energy security and operational efficiency for national electricity systems. Leading countries in energy transition such as Spain, Chile, and the United States already integrate this type of solution into their tenders, consolidating a new standard for clean and base generation. The tender seeks the contracting of new generation wind and photovoltaic solar with storage systems, in capacities ranging from 20 to 300 megawatts, for a total capacity of 600 MW. This innovation marks a milestone in the country’s energy contracting processes, aligning with the transition and sustainability goals promoted by the Dominican Government. The supply period will be fifteen years, starting within 24 months after the signing of the contracts, with the energy being distributed among Edenorte (30%), Edesur (35%) and EDEESTE (35%). During the event, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, the Vice Minister of Energy and Mines, Alfonso Rodríguez, also participated, representing Minister Joel Santos; the president of the Bidding Committee, Héctor Giuliani; and the general managers of the three distributors. With the high participation of 32 interested companies, the event reflected the energy sector’s confidence in regulatory stability and the country’s potential for the development of clean and continuous energy.
