Santiago.- With a solemn act at the San Luis Fortress, civil and military authorities and representatives of institutions commemorated the 162nd anniversary of the Battle of September 6, 1863, considered one of the most transcendental events of the Restoration War, which marked the beginning of the end of the annexation of the Dominican Republic to Spain.
The president of the Permanent Commission of Patriotic Ephemeris, Juan Pablo Uribe, delivered the central speech, in which he highlighted the historical significance of the restorative feat, calling it the breaking point to recover national independence “which had been lost by an act of treason by bad Dominicans.”
Governor Rosa Santos and the mayor of Santiago, Ulises Rodríguez, agreed on the importance of keeping alive the historical memory of the heroes who faced the Spanish army. While the director of Coraasan, Andrés Cueto, and the regional director of Education, Pedro Pablo Marte, emphasized the leading role of the city of Santiago in the great patriotic episodes.

Colonel historian Sócrates Suazo Ruiz, director of History of the Ministry of Defense, presented a review of the feat, and the priest Javier Báez blessed the ceremony, thanking God for the men and women who gave their lives for the freedom of the country.
The patriotic activity began at 8:00 a.m. with the raising of the National Flag, the interpretation of the Anthem by the music band of the Dominican Republic Army (ERD) and the reading of the order of the day. Subsequently, military honors were rendered with a 21-gun salute and floral offerings were laid by different institutions.
The event was attended by the senator for Santiago, Daniel Rivera, as well as various civil and military authorities, in a day that reaffirmed the validity of the restorative legacy and the commitment to honor the memory of those who defended national sovereignty.
