Netflix was confident they would have a great success on their hands with the new series by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, but the reality was different and ‘El refugio atómico’ ended up being a disappointment. So much so that the platform has decided to cancel it and the science fiction successor to ‘La casa de papel’ will be left without an ending.
The news of its cancellation has been confirmed by El País, a media outlet that clarifies Vancouver Media is already dismantling the enormous sets that were built for the making of the series. They were still standing when the first installment premiered, which ended with a cliffhanger whose solution we will never know.
The mix of disappointing audience data with rather negative reviews – barely achieving a 33% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes – has ended up sentencing the series. It has hardly mattered that those responsible had big plans to continue the story, since Netflix has said that’s it.
What does seem evident is that Netflix wanted to think a little before making such a drastic decision. In fact, almost three months have had to pass since its premiere on September 19th until its sad future has been decided.
However, they may have wanted to wait until they also had good news, as the release date for season 2 of ‘Berlin’ has also been announced today, in which we will also see Álvaro Morte reprising the mythical character of the Professor.
