Santo Domingo. – This Saturday, August 30th, at the GMSP will host a Knee Infiltration Day with Hyaluronic Acid, an innovative and cutting-edge treatment to combat pain caused by joint wear and tear. Doctor Leonardo Romero, a specialist traumatologist from the Santa Paula Medical Group (GMSP), explained that hyaluronic acid is a compound that is found naturally in all cells and connective tissues of the body. “Its main function is to maintain adequate hydration in the cells, which allows them to function optimally and stay young,” he assured. In synovial joints, such as the knee, hip, or shoulder, hyaluronic acid is a key component of the synovial fluid. This fluid acts as a lubricant and shock absorber, allowing the bones to glide smoothly over each other. As the body ages or suffers wear and tear (as in the case of osteoarthritis), the quality and quantity of this fluid decrease, causing friction, pain, and inflammation. “When we place additional hyaluronic acid inside the joint,” indicated Dr. Romero, “what we do is restore intracellular homeostasis.” That is, the well-being of the cells is restored, hydration is improved, and the tissue is allowed to regain its elasticity. In addition to its hydrating function, hyaluronic acid in gel form acts as a buffer. By injecting it, it increases the viscosity of the synovial fluid, decreasing the impact on the joint surfaces. “These two characteristics,” added the doctor, “make hyaluronic acid improve the pain and function of the joint.”

Safe, simple procedure with immediate results

The hyaluronic acid infiltration treatment is a very simple and routine procedure, which lasts about 5 minutes and is practically painless. Dr. Romero highlights that the product to be used, a cutting-edge treatment designed to protect and revitalize joints, has a component that acts directly on inflamed structures, helping to reduce inflammation and provide immediate pain relief, in addition to the long-term effect. Although the treatment is not permanent, its effects can last from 6 months to a year when it is “single-dose”. Dr. Romero points out that the duration depends on the quality and viscosity of the hyaluronic acid used. In some cases, a “multi-dose” treatment can be chosen, which requires the application of one ampoule per week for 3 to 5 consecutive weeks, and must be repeated annually.

Benefits of the treatment

This procedure is an effective solution for a variety of pains and joint conditions. While this GMSP session will focus on the knee, hyaluronic acid can be used in any synovial joint suffering from degeneration, such as the shoulder, hip, ankle, elbow, wrist, and even the fingers. It is particularly useful for treating cartilage wear, a condition known as osteoarthritis. “When the cartilage wears down, the quality of the fluid inside the joint decreases, becomes watery and does not lubricate properly”, explains Dr. Romero. This causes the cartilage to dry out, break down and expose nerve endings that cause intense pain. Infiltration helps restore lubrication, reduce pain and improve mobility.

Details of the day and how to participate

The day, which will take place on Saturday, August 30, in the PB of the GMSP, is designed to be an efficient and specialized event, where the patient will receive: Medical evaluation by an orthopedist on the condition of the knee. An X-ray will be performed in the clinic to determine exactly the condition of the joint. Infiltration will proceed with the application of hyaluronic acid by the specialist. The specialist will also offer recommendations and guidance on how to care for the joint, whether physiotherapy or long-term treatment should be done.
