Constanza.- Community members, social leaders, and representatives from various sectors of the Tireo municipality staged a protest this Sunday in the Suriel community to demand that the Central Government fulfill a series of public works promised since 2022, in a day marked by moments of tension and clashes with the authorities.

During the demonstration, led by the mayor of Tireo, Paul Piña, arguments, shoving, and the launching of tear gas canisters by members of the National Police and the Army were reported, according to the participants.

The protest comes just days after a peaceful demonstration held in front of the National Palace, where residents of Tireo demanded the execution of projects considered fundamental for the community’s development.

The protesters expressed their discontent with the governor of La Vega, Luisa Altagracia Jiménez Cabreja, whom they accused of being untruthful regarding the status of the demanded works. During the day, slogans were heard stating that the representative of the Executive Branch “is not welcome in Tireo”.

The criticism arose after the governor described the protests as politically motivated actions driven by opposition sectors, statements that were rejected by the organizers of the mobilizations.

Paul Piña and the community members insisted that their demands respond exclusively to development and well-being needs for the municipality, and not to partisan interests.

The protesters pointed out that there is growing concern over the delay in the execution of projects that were announced by the Government as priorities to improve the quality of life for the inhabitants of Tireo, but which have not yet been started.

In that sense, they demanded that the authorities fulfill the commitments made to the community and expedite the start of the works promised more than two years ago.
