San Pedro de Macorís, D.R. — The Central University of the East (UCE) awarded 50 new scholarships from the UCE Excellence Program to high school graduates with academic averages of 95 points or higher, who will be able to begin their university studies with 100% coverage.
The initiative recognizes the effort, discipline, and academic performance of outstanding young people, while expanding opportunities for access to higher education.
With this new installment, the UCE reaches 270 scholarships awarded during 2026 in undergraduate and graduate programs, all financed with the institution’s own resources. The social investment allocated to these programs amounts to RD$66 million during the year.
During the event, the rector of the UCE, Master José Altagracia Hazim Torres, highlighted the institution’s commitment to education as a tool for social transformation.

“Each scholarship represents an opportunity to change a life and open new possibilities for development for a family and for the country. At UCE, we will continue to bet on talent and merit, convinced that no economic limitation should prevent a young person from reaching their professional goals,” he expressed.
Currently, 665 students are pursuing their degrees through the various scholarship programs promoted by the university. These include the UCE Excellence Program, cultural, sports, and administrative scholarships, aimed at students, employees, and their direct family members, as well as those granted through collaboration agreements with partner companies and institutions.
This policy is part of the vision of the UCE founder, Dr. José Hazim Azar, who conceived a higher education institution where access would be based on talent, effort, and a vocation for service.

As a result of this sustained policy, between 35% and 40% of the student enrollment receives some type of scholarship funded with institutional resources.
Over the last 16 years, the Universidad Central del Este has awarded more than 8,200 scholarships, with a cumulative investment exceeding RD$966 million, consolidating one of the most far-reaching and enduring self-funded student support programs in Dominican higher education.
The delivery of these new scholarships reaffirms UCE’s commitment to the training of talented young people and to the creation of opportunities that contribute to human development, social mobility, and the sustainable progress of the Dominican Republic.
