Santo Domingo.- Businessman Antonio Espaillat appeared this Thursday before the Attorney General’s Office, accompanied by his lawyer Miguel Valerio, within the framework of the investigation into the tragic collapse of the Jet Set nightclub, which occurred on April 8 and left a balance of 236 people dead and more than 180 injured. The appearance comes after the revelation of the testimony of a former employee of the nightclub, who claimed to have warned Espaillat about the structural risks of the venue days before the event. According to the employee, the businessman was notified that the party scheduled for that date, hosted by the merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who is also among the fatalities, should not be held. “We are required by the Attorney General’s Office and we have come,” declared lawyer Miguel Valerio succinctly upon his arrival at the PGR building.

The Public Ministry confirmed that it has obtained access to the former employee’s mobile phone, from which conversations between him and Espaillat were extracted. In the messages, the worker would have warned that the establishment’s roof presented an imminent risk of collapse, which, if verified, could aggravate the employer’s criminal liability. Additionally, the National Office of Seismic Evaluation and Infrastructure and Building Vulnerability (Onesvie) delivered a preliminary report to the PGR, which is part of the evidentiary body supporting the ongoing investigation. The case has shocked the country due to the magnitude of the tragedy and the accusations of negligence now pointing towards the administrators of the emblematic entertainment establishment. The Attorney General’s Office has not yet offered details on possible charges, but new judicial proceedings are expected in the coming days.
