Lidia Pérez calls for infrastructure oversight law after Jet Set tragedy

Santo Domingo. – The deputy from Puerto Plata, Lidia Pérez, once again raised her voice this Wednesday regarding the tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub, where her brother, the merengue singer Rubby Pérez, died, stating that the lack of state supervision directly contributed to the event. During statements offered prior to the coercion measure hearing against businessman Antonio Espaillat, the main defendant in the case, the legislator said she had been deeply moved upon reading the file submitted by the Public Ministry.

“When you read the request for coercive measures from the Public Ministry, it is something that particularly moved me. Upon reading all this with more zeal, yesterday I spoke in the National Congress hall, that in our country we need a law for the supervision and inspection of infrastructure”, expressed Pérez.

The congresswoman maintained that the tragedy evidenced serious structural failures in the building where the nightclub operated and questioned the lack of organizations that oversee public spaces.

“That hit in the face, that building did not have suitable conditions for it to be frequented by people. However, as there was no supervisory body for it, that’s why that happened,” he denounced.

Pérez called on his fellow lawmakers to prioritize legislation in that direction, ensuring that what happened at the Jet Set should mark a before and after in terms of security and infrastructure control in the Dominican Republic.

“We cannot give up. Yesterday I called on my fellow deputies, who understood that given the magnitude of this Jet Set tragedy, we have to prioritize this, which is undoubtedly of national interest,” he concluded.
