One dead and one injured after shooting at liquor store in Pañal, Santiago

Santiago. – A man died and another was seriously injured on Thursday night during a shooting attack recorded in a liquor store in the community of Matanzas, municipality of Pañal, Santiago province, in an event that, according to preliminary versions, originated from a conflict unrelated to the victims. The mortal victim was identified as Manuel Payano, alias “Lauri”, 40 years old, a resident of the community of Laguna Prieta. The injured person is Carlos Gabriel Rosario, 26 years old, who remains in a delicate condition in a health center after being shot.

According to the testimony of “Yofreisi Rosario”, the incident occurred around 7:00 PM, when an individual described as highly confrontational, allegedly under the influence of alcohol and other substances, opened fire indiscriminately against the people who were in the establishment, popularly known as “El Basurero”. Family and friends assured that Payano did not have any kind of conflict with the aggressor and that he was at the place circumstantially, sharing with relatives who had arrived from different areas of the country and abroad on the occasion of the end-of-year festivities.

“He was a peaceful person and tried to avoid problems. He wasn’t sharing with that person nor did he have differences with him,” expressed a close acquaintance.

The alleged perpetrator of the act was identified as “Harrison Marteo”, who, after committing the attack, fled and is actively sought by the authorities. The shooting left Payano dead at the scene, while Rosario was injured. Miraculously, no more victims were reported, despite the fact that more than 400 people were in the business at the time of the attack. Family members described the event as aggravated homicide and attempted homicide, considering that the attacker’s actions endangered the lives of dozens of attendees. In that regard, Somario Inoa, the victim’s father-in-law, demanded a thorough investigation from the authorities and that the person responsible be brought to justice according to the law. As of the closing of this edition, the authorities had not offered official details about the attacker’s arrest or the progress of the investigations.
