Santo Domingo.– Political leader Tony Peña Guaba expressed his support for the proposal by businessman and media personality Santiago Matías to relax nightlife hours in the Dominican Republic, considering that current restrictions affect the development of tourism and the economy.
Peña Guaba stated that he has raised this position even to the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, as he believes that a country with a strong tourism vocation should not maintain limitations that, in his view, reduce commercial activity during the night.
“It doesn’t seem right to me that a tourist country, which this year will receive around 12 million tourists, should close its nightlife at 10:00 at night,” he expressed.
The leader pointed out that the restrictions directly impact restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and other entertainment establishments, while also limiting leisure options for both visitors and residents.
“What we want is for the tourist to go out into the street, go to the restaurant, the bar, the nightclub, and for the economy to move,” he stated.

Peña Guaba also questioned the idea that reducing the number of people on the streets represents an effective citizen security strategy. In that sense, he maintained that security must be guaranteed even when there is an active nightlife.
“Security must be present even if people are on the street,” he stated.
