Santo Domingo. – The Secretary of Defense of the United States, Pete Hegseth, visited the President of the Republic Luis Abinader to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and narcoterrorism in the Caribbean, highlighting that the Dominican Republic “has become a regional leader prepared to face difficult challenges”.

“Narco-terrorists only understand the language of force and rapid actions, and that is what we are doing together with the Dominican Republic to save lives and curb violence,” he affirmed. He pointed out that the joint efforts will allow “saving tens of thousands of American and Caribbean lives,” thanks to the offensive that both countries are carrying out against illegal vessels and routes in the region. The official highlighted that U.S. intelligence systems allow identifying “where they come from, where they are going, what they transport, and whom they represent” the criminal organizations operating in the Caribbean, which he assured is changing the security dynamics in the region. Hegseth added that the Dominican Republic has demonstrated leadership not only in the fight against drug trafficking, but also in regional stability and the response to the Haiti crisis, which is why the U.S. chose the country as the first stop to strengthen strategic alliances. “It’s a model association for the region, which we hope to expand with other countries,” he declared, reiterating the Department of Defense’s support for the Dominican government’s actions.
