La Altagracia.– The General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services (DGSPC) reported that it is investigating an incident that occurred this Wednesday afternoon at the CCR-XIV Anamuya, in Higüey, where two penitentiary agents were injured after being attacked with scissors by an inmate.
The affected officers were identified as Rafael Guerrero, service supervisor, and Alfredo Eusebio Zorrilla, deputy director of Security at the center. Both were assaulted by the inmate Jorge Luís Jiménez Vásquez, alias “Jaici”, who is currently in pretrial detention.

According to the preliminary report, the officers were conducting a patrol in the area of the center’s softball field, prior to a game between inmates, when Jiménez Vásquez emerged from one of the hallways carrying a pair of scissors broken in two and, without saying a word, began to attack them.
According to the DGSPC, Guerrero was the first to be attacked and received a stab wound in the lower abdomen. Subsequently, the inmate attacked Zorrilla, who had his back turned, causing wounds to his arm and left side.

The inmate also allegedly attempted to assault the Penitentiary Surveillance and Treatment (VTP) supervisors Eduard Tolentino and Ángel Lorenzo, who managed to avoid the attack.
After the assault, Jiménez Vásquez barricaded himself in the hallways leading to pavilions C and D. Subsequently, he was neutralized by security agents following a struggle, during which he fell to the ground and suffered a minor head injury and a possible fracture to his right wrist.
The inmate was transferred to a health center, where he is receiving medical attention. Meanwhile, the two injured prison officers were taken to a medical facility and underwent surgical procedures.

The DGSPC indicated that Rafael Guerrero has injuries to his small intestine, colon, and stomach, which is why he remains in the intensive care unit under observation. His health status is reported as stable.
Meanwhile, Alfredo Zorrilla presents injuries to a part of his stomach and sternum, in addition to a wound on his arm that affects muscle and skin. The institution indicated that his injuries are not serious and that he is also in stable condition.
Jiménez Vásquez, who has been held for approximately one year and two months in the penitentiary center, is accused of violating articles 379 and 384 of the Penal Code.
The General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services reported that it keeps the investigation open to establish the circumstances that caused the incident, determine the corresponding responsibilities, and adopt the disciplinary measures established by the regulations.
