FBI turns to genetic genealogy in the case of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance

United States.- Arizona authorities are intensifying the search for Nancy Guthrie, an 84-year-old missing woman, resorting to new strategies after failing to obtain results in traditional DNA databases. According to Fox News, the American network reported that the FBI decided to use genetic genealogy to advance the identification of the alleged perpetrator, after unsuccessfully analyzing the national criminal database.


Nancy Guthrie’s case has mobilized more than four hundred investigators, an unusual figure even for disappearances in the United States. Fox News details that the deployment is partly due to the visibility of the case, given the victim’s relationship with journalist Savannah Guthrie and the direct attention of the American president.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos assured the media that his team will not stop the investigation until they find the victim and her alleged captor: “I know I have a team that is working hard every minute of the day. We are not going to give up. We will find you and we will find Nancy“. The use of genetic genealogy, incorporated after the failure of conventional DNA identification methods, allows searching for potential relatives of the suspect through public and private databases, offering a technical alternative when traditional approaches do not yield matches.
