Lawrence Mayor, Brian DePeña, was released this Friday afternoon by a federal court in Boston, hours after being detained by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

DePeña left the court and is heading towards his residence in Lawrence, according to available information.

The mayor was arrested this morning amid a federal investigation. So far, no formal charges have been reported against him.

The raid took place around 5:15 in the morning, while the arrest occurred at approximately 6:00 in the morning.

According to preliminary reports, federal prosecutors had filed a complaint on Thursday with the United States District Court in Boston related to alleged wire fraud and money laundering crimes.

Supposedly, DePeña had obtained a loan of up to US$1.65 million under an economic aid program from the Small Business Administration (SBA) and allegedly used part of those funds to pay tax debts, mortgage loans, and expenses related to his mayoral campaign.
