A 53-year-old mountaineer was rescued alive after becoming trapped on the face of Campanile di Val Montanaia in the Italian Dolomites.
The man encountered trouble while descending by rappel and was left suspended in the void throughout the night, approximately 2,000 meters above the ground.
A helicopter initially attempted to reach him but had to abandon the rescue because of fog, strong winds and the risk of falling rocks.
Rescuers eventually climbed to the location on foot and used ropes to reach and free the mountaineer in the darkness.
After 12 hours suspended on the mountain, the man remained conscious and alert and was successfully brought to safety.
