Montevideo.- The Government of Uruguay decreed today national mourning until next May 16 after the death of former President José Mujica, who died this Tuesday in Montevideo at the age of 89 and who will be veiled from tomorrow Wednesday in the Legislative Palace of Montevideo.
“Official mourning, of a national nature, is declared for the days 14 to 16, for the death of the former President of the Republic, José Alberto Mujica Cordano”, indicates the decree signed by Yamandú Orsi.
According to this, the flag of Uruguay will remain at half-mast in all public buildings, embassies of the Republic abroad, barracks, fortresses, air bases and warships.
Likewise, Mujica’s mortal remains will have funeral honors of President of the Republic.
The funeral procession will depart at 10:00 local time (13:00 GMT) from the Torre Ejecutiva de Montevideo and will march along 18 de Julio Avenue – the main thoroughfare of Montevideo – to the headquarters of the National Liberation Movement Tupamaros. Later it will pass through the headquarters of the Movimiento de Participación Popular and the Frente Amplio.
At 15:00 local time (18:00 GMT) the wake will begin, which will take place in the Hall of Lost Steps of the Legislative Palace of Montevideo, where the general public will be able to enter. For the moment it is not confirmed whether it will extend for 24 hours or 36.

On April 29th of last year, Mujica announced in a press conference that he had a tumor in his esophagus. Shortly after, he revealed that it was malignant and that it had to be treated with radiotherapy, a procedure to which he was subjected in Montevideo.
At the beginning of this year, the former president reported in an interview with the local weekly Búsqueda that the cancer that was discovered in his esophagus had spread to his liver.
