New York.- The Mount Sinai health system has established new restrictions for first-time patients enrolled in certain health insurance plans, a measure that may impact members of the Dominican community and other immigrant populations residing in New York.
The changes went into effect on August 1, 2026 and include Medicare Advantage plans from Fidelis Care and Wellcare, while certain coverage modalities require specific verification before requesting a new consultation.
The provision is aimed primarily at new patients and does not imply a general suspension of services for individuals already receiving care within Mount Sinai.
In its official information regarding 2026 Medicare Advantage plans, Mount Sinai notes that, as of August 1, its providers stopped accepting new patients enrolled in Fidelis and Wellcare. The system continues to include other insurance plans within its network, although it warns that participation may vary depending on the contracted product and the physician or facility where the service is requested.
Mount Sinai and coverage
The situation takes on special importance in New York due to the high number of residents who depend on public or subsidized health plans and receive medical services at the system’s various centers.
Among them are members of the Dominican community who use this insurance for consultations, specialized treatments, and other medical services in Manhattan and other boroughs of the city.
Mount Sinai explains that it periodically reviews the agreements it maintains with insurance companies, so the participation of certain plans may change. The system itself recommends confirming directly with the provider whether a specific policy remains in-network before receiving medical care.
This is especially relevant because the same company can offer different types of coverage, and not all of them necessarily have the same conditions for access to doctors and hospitals.
Mount Sinai: current patients
People who were already Mount Sinai patients before the new provisions went into effect can continue to receive care in cases covered by their plans, while the greater limitations fall on those attempting to enter the system for the first time with the affected coverage.
The official page maintains, for example, EmblemHealth GHI and HIP among its participating Medicare Advantage plans for 2026, so policyholders should check the specific product they have before assuming they have lost access to the hospital system.
Mount Sinai has hospitals, physician practices, and specialized centers located throughout New York, so insurance acceptance conditions may also vary depending on the doctor, the facility, and the type of service requested.
Patients who have questions about their coverage should contact their insurance company and the medical center before scheduling an appointment, in order to confirm if the provider remains in-network and to learn about the alternatives available in case their plan is subject to the new restrictions.
