Bogotá.- The Colombian senator and presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay remains in “critical condition” and has shown little response after the surgeries he underwent on Saturday for the injuries he suffered that day in an attack, doctors reported today.
“The Santa Fe de Bogotá Foundation, with the authorization of the family, informs that the patient Miguel Uribe Turbay remains in critical condition and has had little response to the medical interventions and treatments performed,” stated that medical center in a statement.
Uribe Turbay, 39 years old and senator of the Uribista party Centro Democrático, received two shots on Saturday from a teenager, who was later arrested, while giving a speech at a campaign event in the Bogotá neighborhood of Modelia. That same day, he underwent two surgical interventions, on his head and on a leg, at the Santa Fe Foundation, one of the most prestigious medical centers in Colombia, where the politician is fighting for his life.“His situation is of the utmost seriousness. Therefore, the prognosis continues to be reserved,” adds the medical report from this Monday, signed by Dr. Adolfo Llinás Volpe, medical director of Santa Fe.
Waiting for a Miracle
Also this Monday, Uribe Turbay’s wife, María Claudia Tarazona, expressed her anguish in a message on social media in which she stated that a “miracle” is needed.“I ask you from the bottom of my heart to not stop praying. Miguel needs a miracle,” Tarazona wrote and accompanied her message with a photograph in which she holds her husband’s hand.
The assassination attempt on Uribe Turbay has caused consternation in the country, where different sectors have expressed their fear that the 2026 electoral process will be a return to the darkest years of political violence, as was the campaign for the 1990 presidential elections in which three candidates were assassinated.
In that campaign, Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento (August 1989), Bernardo Jaramillo Ossa, and Carlos Pizarro Leongómez fell under the bullets in March and April 1990, respectively.

The Colombian Minister of Defense, Pedro Sánchez Suárez, said last night, after a security council attended by President Gustavo Petro, that the authorities are working with three hypotheses about the motives for the attack.“We could group them into three main groups: if it was directly because of Miguel Uribe Turbay, or if it was because he is a politician and everything that goes around his political party, or if it is about destabilizing the national Government through attacks on some members who think differently from this Government,” said the minister.
