Philadelphia, United States.– The extraordinary streak of Dominican pitcher Cristopher Sánchez came to an end on Wednesday night, after establishing one of the most dominant performances for a left-hander in the recent history of Major League Baseball.

The Philadelphia Phillies’ star starter saw his streak of 50.2 consecutive scoreless innings end during the 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Park.

The run came in the seventh inning when Ty France hit a double and subsequently scored thanks to a single by Jackson Merrill, ending a historic streak that had already placed Sánchez among the best records registered in the modern era of baseball.

Despite the streak being broken, the fans present at the stadium recognized the Dominican’s feat with a prolonged standing ovation, as the left-hander momentarily left the mound with a smile and visible signs of emotion.

Sánchez completed another brilliant performance by working seven innings of one run and eight strikeouts, solidifying a spectacular 1.46 ERA on the season.

Sánchez’s scoreless innings streak was recorded as the longest in Phillies history and the fifth-longest in a Major League Baseball season since 1893, the year the mound was moved to its current distance.

During the historic streak, the Dominican surpassed marks achieved by legendary pitchers such as Cy Young, Zack Greinke, and Bob Gibson, remaining only behind Orel Hershiser, Don Drysdale, Walter Johnson, and Jack Coombs.

Interim manager Don Mattingly highlighted the magnitude of what the Dominican player achieved, noting that performances of that level are extremely rare even within the history of baseball.

For his part, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski called Sánchez’s performance one of the best stretches seen in the Major Leagues.

The performance came just hours after Cristopher Sánchez was named National League Pitcher of the Month for May, an honor earned after completing a full month without allowing any runs, accumulating 45 strikeouts and just three walks in 39 innings pitched.

With his impressive performance, Sánchez continues to establish himself as one of the leading figures in Dominican pitching and one of the most dominant arms of the 2026 Major League Baseball season.
