SANTO DOMINGO.- The Secretary General of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), Andreas Zagklis, will be present at the highly anticipated match between the national teams of the United States and the Dominican Republic, scheduled for July 3rd, as part of the official inauguration of the renovated Arena Banreservas Profesor Virgilio Travieso Soto.

The information was provided by the president of the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal), engineer Rafael Uribe, who highlighted the importance of the visit by the chief operating officer of the world basketball governing body.

Uribe described Zagklis’s presence as a recognition of the growth and strengthening that Dominican basketball has experienced in recent years, both at an organizational and competitive level.

“It is a great honor for us to receive the FIBA Secretary General at an event of such significance for national sports. His visit represents a sign of confidence in the work that the Dominican Basketball Federation has been carrying out and in the sustained development that our country has achieved on the international stage,” expressed Uribe.

The federation leader pointed out that Zagklis’s presence will coincide with a historic moment for Dominican basketball, marked by the reopening of one of the country’s most iconic sports facilities, completely renovated to host international-level events.

The matchup between the United States and the Dominican Republic corresponds to the third qualifying window for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 and has sparked enormous interest among fans due to the quality of both teams and the relevance of the points at stake.

Likewise, Uribe highlighted that the visit of the high-ranking FIBA executive will allow for showcasing firsthand the structural and organizational progress achieved by Dominican basketball, as well as the passion that characterizes the Dominican fan base.

Andreas Zagklis has played a fundamental role in the global expansion of basketball since he assumed the position of FIBA Secretary General, driving initiatives aimed at the growth of the sport, the modernization of competitions, and the strengthening of national federations.
