Chris Duarte debuts with Unicaja in the Intercontinental Cup with a victory over Alahli
Spain. – Dominican basketball player Chris Duarte had his expected official debut this Thursday with Unicaja de Málaga, contributing five points in his team’s victory (61-73) against Alahli of Libya, in the opening day of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2025, held in Singapore.
Duarte, former NBA player, scored a two-point shot and a three-pointer in two attempts, as well as grabbing two defensive rebounds and dishing out an assist, earning a rating of seven credits in his debut with the Andalusian team.
The offensive figure of the match was his compatriot Tyson Pérez, who led Unicaja with 16 points and made the difference in a game of low collective accuracy. Also, Tyler Kalinoski and James Webb III stood out, both with 12 units each.
On the Libyan side, the Cape Verdean Iván Almeida shone with 21 points, while Ismael Romero contributed 20, although their efforts were not enough against the depth of the squad led by Ibon Navarro.
With this triumph, the current champion of the Intercontinental Cup will depend on themselves in their next match of Group A, when they face this Friday the Utsunomiya Brex of Japan, in search of a place in the final on Sunday, where the people from Malaga will try to revalidate the crown conquered in 2024 also on Asian soil.
The match was marked by an erratic start, with low shooting percentages, but Unicaja managed to impose its rhythm in the second half thanks to its defensive solidity and greater rotation, thus sealing a victorious debut in the international tournament.
