Madrid (EFE). Former Spanish basketball star Pau Gasol announced an investment of 55 million euros through his firm Gasol16 Ventures to become a sponsor of Liga F for the next four seasons, with the goal of strengthening the development of women’s soccer in Spain.

The agreement, presented under the slogan “New era, same ambition and new dimension”, was made official alongside the president of Liga F, Beatriz Álvarez, who described the alliance as a decisive step towards the consolidation and professionalization of the championship.

“We want to be the most attractive league in the world and a benchmark so that the best players want to come here“, stated Álvarez during the event.

Gasol explained that the investment responds to the conviction that women’s sports are going through an ideal moment to accelerate their growth.

“We have enough talent and hard work to truly bet on our female athletes. We must inspire girls so they are encouraged to play soccer,” he/she stated.

Investment to strengthen clubs and attract talent

The economic resources will be allocated to improve different areas of the competition, including:

An agreement after a year of negotiations

The agreement was reached after approximately a year of talks between Gasol16 Ventures and Liga F, and received majority backing from the clubs during the competition’s General Assembly.

For her part, Beatriz Álvarez acknowledged that, although television audiences maintain an upward trend, one of the main challenges remains increasing stadium attendance.

Gasol concluded by highlighting the importance of greater media coverage to continue driving the growth of women’s soccer.

“We must look for formulas to continue growing from a communication perspective as well. The role of the press is fundamental for the public to take an interest and for fans to enjoy this competition more and more,” he stated.
