Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. – A specialized commission presented to President Luis Abinader a proposal for the construction of a modern baseball stadium in the Ensanche La Fe sector, an initiative that seeks to transform the country’s sports infrastructure and position the Dominican Republic to host international-level events, including official Major League Baseball games.
The proposal contemplates the development of a state-of-the-art sports complex that would replace or complement the functions of the historic Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium, an emblematic stage for Dominican baseball for more than six decades and home to the Tigres del Licey and Leones del Escogido teams.
The members of the commission led by Dr. Jorge Subero Isa, which was created by decrees 306-25 and 378-25, consider that the growth of professional baseball, the rise of Dominican players in Major League Baseball, and the need for modern facilities justify the construction of a new structure that meets the international standards required by the world’s leading sports organizations.

As explained, the project seeks to turn Santo Domingo into an attractive destination for hosting exhibition games, special series, and international events, leveraging the prestige that the Dominican Republic has earned as one of the main powerhouses producing talent for professional baseball.
“The Dominican Republic deserves a sports facility in line with its history and the impact it has had on the development of world baseball. We are a nation that exports talent, passion, and sports tradition, so it is necessary to have a modern venue that reflects that reality,” stated representatives of the commission during the presentation of the initiative.
The proposal states that the new stadium would be built on the grounds where the Quisqueya Stadium is currently located, in Ensanche La Fe, a strategic area of the capital due to its accessibility and connectivity with major transport routes. In addition, the design includes parking areas, commercial zones, recreational spaces, and technological facilities that allow for a more comfortable experience for fans.
They explained that the future legislation will also establish that the Development and Export Bank (BANDEX) will act on behalf of the Dominican State to lead and organize the development of the initiative.

Likewise, the commission emphasized its commitment to the Dominican winter tournament, noting that the execution mechanisms for the work will be designed to safeguard and guarantee the celebration of the annual sporting event.
On the other hand, it was detailed that the mechanism to be used for the public-private partnership will be that of a mixed corporation, which will be established through a law that must be approved by the National Congress.
Under this modality, the Dominican State will contribute only the land where the project will be developed and will have an equity participation proportional to its value, while the private sector will be responsible for providing the financing for the construction.
Among the proposed features are more comfortable seats, corporate boxes, VIP areas, advanced lighting systems, high-definition digital screens, and multifunctional spaces that could be used for concerts, cultural activities, and other large-scale events.
The initiative is also conceived to be a comprehensive real estate complex, so the project will not be limited solely to the construction of the sports structure. This also includes the development of residential complexes and shopping galleries, and contemplates the possibility of incorporating a hotel within the facilities to boost the socioeconomic and tourist dynamism of the area.
Specialists consulted consider that a project of this nature would have a positive impact on the national economy due to the generation of jobs during the construction phase and the commercial dynamism it would produce once it becomes operational.

The initiative’s promoters clarified that the proposal does not intend to erase the history of Quisqueya, but rather to project the future of Dominican baseball onto a modern platform that allows for the continued strengthening of the development of this sport.
“Quisqueya is part of the national identity and the collective memory of several generations. The goal is to ensure that future generations can enjoy baseball in modern, internationally competitive facilities,” they noted.
The construction of a new stadium could also open the doors for the Dominican Republic to be considered as a host for official Major League Baseball games, an aspiration that has gained momentum due to the growing prominence of Dominican players in the best baseball in the world.
Currently, hundreds of Dominican baseball players have participated in Major League Baseball and numerous players born in the country continue to stand out in the main organizations of American professional baseball.
The commission indicated that it will continue to develop technical, economic, and urban planning studies to evaluate the feasibility of the project, as well as the financing mechanisms that will allow the proposal to become a reality.
Meanwhile, the initiative has begun to generate expectations among fans, sports leaders, and business sectors that see the project as an opportunity to drive a new stage in the history of national sports.
