London. German Alexander Zverev ended a long drought against American Taylor Fritz and sealed his qualification to the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time in his career, after prevailing with authority 6-4, 6-4, and 6-2.
The tournament’s second seed ended a seven-match losing streak against Fritz, dominating the encounter from start to finish to confirm the great form he is in after winning the Roland Garros title weeks ago.
With a solid performance on the grass of the All England Club, Zverev demonstrated a remarkable evolution on a surface where he had historically not achieved his best results.
Thanks to this victory, the German became the fifth active tennis player to reach the men’s singles semifinals of all four Grand Slam tournaments.
In search of a spot in the final, Zverev will face Briton Arthur Fery, who extended the local crowd’s dream after defeating the ninth-seeded Italian Flavio Cobolli with partials of 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), and 6-0.
Fery, invited by the tournament organization, will play in a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time and became only the second player in Wimbledon history to reach that stage as a wild card, after the Croatian Goran Ivanišević, champion of the tournament in 2001.
