Ferrari’s first fully electric model, the Luce, sold for $40 million at a charity auction, setting a new record for the most expensive new car ever sold at auction in this format, according to Bloomberg.
The custom-built model was auctioned by Sotheby’s during Monterey Car Week in California, far surpassing last year’s record, when a customized Ferrari Daytona SP3 sold for $26 million.
The Luce was unveiled in May with an initial price of €550,000, or approximately $636,356. Its launch generated controversy and affected Ferrari’s stock market value.
The car was designed by LoveFrom, the design studio founded by Jony Ive, the former Apple design chief associated with iconic products including the iPhone and iMac.
The Luce also breaks with Ferrari’s traditional approach by offering more than 1,000 horsepower in a four-door configuration.
