Santo Domingo. — The National District Basketball Association (Abadina) officially announced the celebration of the José Heredia Castillo Second Division Basketball Tournament, an event that will bring together 20 clubs from the National District and will be dedicated to Vice Mayor Starling Alcántara.
The event will begin next Tuesday, the 24th, at the facilities of the emblematic Mauricio Báez Club, a traditional venue for capital basketball, where a large attendance of fans and followers of this sport is expected.
The launch event was held in the James Rodríguez multipurpose hall of the Ministry of Sports of the Dominican Republic, with the presence of sports leaders, municipal authorities, representatives of the participating clubs, and special guests linked to the development of basketball in the country.
During the activity, the organizers highlighted the importance of this tournament as a platform for the growth of emerging talent in the National District, emphasizing that the second division has become a key space for the training of players who later feed the upper teams and professional leagues.
Furthermore, the legacy of José Heredia Castillo, after whom the tournament is named, was valued as an influential figure in promoting community basketball. His career has left its mark on different generations of athletes, establishing him as a benchmark within the discipline.
The president of Abadina expressed that the dedication to Vice Mayor Starling Alcántara responds to his constant support for sports and his commitment to initiatives that promote healthy coexistence and the development of youth in the different sectors of the National District. “We recognize in him an ally of sports, someone who has shown genuine interest in supporting our clubs and our young athletes,” he pointed out.
The tournament will feature the participation of 20 teams, distributed into different groups, which guarantees an intense and high-level competition. It will be played under a format that will allow clubs to demonstrate their competitive capacity, with a view to achieving promotion and consolidating themselves within the organized basketball of the capital.
Similarly, it was reported that the event will have the support of various public and private institutions, which have bet on the strengthening of sport as a tool for social transformation.
