Santo Domingo.– Political leader Jean Luis Rodríguez expressed his support for the decision of the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, to enact the new Penal Code and simultaneously order the creation of a follow-up commission composed of renowned jurists and representatives of society to evaluate future improvements.
Rodríguez stated that the presidential decision represents an exercise of democratic leadership, by combining respect for the constitutional process with openness to dialogue and the permanent improvement of laws.
“Strong democracies are not characterized by avoiding difficult decisions, but by assuming them with responsibility and always keeping channels open to listen and improve,” he stated.
He indicated that for decades Dominican society demanded the updating of a Penal Code in accordance with the challenges of the 21st century and recalled that the approval of this legislation was the result of an extensive process carried out in the National Congress.

Likewise, he valued the creation of the monitoring commission announced by the Executive Branch, considering that it constitutes a sign of institutional maturity and a willingness to continue strengthening the national legal framework through dialogue and consensus.
Rodríguez maintained that the public debate surrounding the Penal Code is legitimate and typical of any democracy, which is why he called for differences of opinion to be expressed with respect, arguments, and proposals, always preserving trust in institutions.

Finally, he reiterated his support for President Luis Abinader and urged all national sectors to contribute to the strengthening of the rule of law, convinced that the best reforms are those that combine firmness in decision-making with openness to continue building consensus for the benefit of the country.
